The "record label" is dead, at least as it has been known in the last 50 years.
For over well over half a century, the record label has stood as the gatekeeper between the artist and the audience, a sleazy middleman that hustles both sides. For the artists, it was a foul competition, allowing through only those deemed worhty. For the audience, when the labels were not accusing them of being abject criminals, they were quietly fixing the prices of CDs.
The Internet is changing all of this. The audience can now seek out the music that they want to hear. Artist and audience can connect directly now, bypassing the old-guard gatekeepers. Improving technologies allow artists to record and release high-quality music for a fraction of the cost it took merely ten years ago. Forward looking retailers are becoming aware of "The Long Tail", opening up for and even seeing profit in the independent artist, not just the superstar.
The playing field is changing, and Future Cabaret Records is finding its niche in this new market. We approach the music business more like modern art business, a connection between an artist and a patron. Rather than "signing", manipulating, and exploiting artists, we provide the virtual gallery space and use our many years of business experience in the new market to try and sell our artists. Having done the lion's share of the work for their music by creating, recording, and producing it, we believe the artist should receive the lion's share of the profit.
The "record label" is dead. Future Cabaret Records is what comes next.
